About

THE PROCESS

LATHE CUT RECORDS ARE A UNIQUE FORMAT AND AS SUCH HAVE UNIQUE PROPERTIES.
THE AUDIO ON A LATHE CUT IS SUBJECT TO LIMITATIONS SUCH AS FREQUENCY RESPONSE (100HZ-12000HZ MAX).
THE SOUND OF A LATHE CUT IS NOT UNLIKE AN OLD TIME 78 RPM RECORD but can sound as good as a well played 45rpm record
(There are anomalies where i have been able to get more frequency response and depth out of a cut 50-16000hz but this is not guaranteed)

I cut records to play back at 45 rpm

MAXIMUM TIME IS ABOUT 4 MINUTES PER SIDE On A 7 inch RECORD. GROOVE SIZE GIVES ABOUT 3.5 MINUTES PER Inch

I CAN CUT 7''  records as well as other sizes.

i also have a wider disco groove that makes about 1.5 min per inch

maximum time on a 12'' is 11 min per side
maximum time on a 10'' is 8 min per side

TO MAKE RECORDS I NEED AUDIO FROM YOU.
THIS CAN BE A CD-R, FLASH DRIVE OR UPLOADED FILE.
.WAV FILES ARE THE BEST OPTION FOR FIDELITY.
AUDIO IS THEN PROCESSED FOR THE LATHE.
TEST CUT IS MADE AND RECORDED THEN SENT TO YOU FOR APPROVAL.
ONCE SIGNED OFF ON, YOUR RECORDS ARE CUT.

Recording Direct To Disc

Live recording directly to the cutter is possible and can net some very nice results.
Recording to the cutter is not difficult. It can be setup and done in an afternoon.
Because of the nature of how music needs to be processed for the lathe, audio must pass through some digital processing to make it hospitable for disc playback and this can be done in real time during the recording process. It does not interrupt the vibe of the session.
I also own a portable recording booth that can be setup and torn down in a few hours. It is large enough for a solo, duo or small trio and could also fit a jazz kit if needed.

About My Lathe

My lathe is built entirely out of repurposed parts never intended for this job. The technology to make this type of record is over 85 years old. My lathe uses a broadcast turntable as a base to turn the record blanks. The cutter head is a basic magnetic type similar to ones made in the 40s with the exception of being stereo, employing design elements from modern mastering lathes of the 70s and 80s. The cutter head moves on a linear gantry over the turntable base driven buy a 1rpm geared motor. My cutter head amp is a fully discrete (no microchips) analog stereo amplifier that runs 100 watts per channel. The cutter head employs two high power drive coils with powerful neodymium magnetic motors and runs at 48 watts, The needle is sharpened high grade ultra steel tungsten and designed for cutting polycarbonate.
